Kittie #25 fresh off the easel.

This gorgeous Persian cat is only ten months old and her name is Sky.  She is very affectionate and just like a child when she wakes up.  She cries till her mom answers ... "here I am" ... and then she goes to her and looks at her with the adorable expression of mom-I-slept-and-somebody-woke-me-up.  :-)  You can't help but love her.  :-)  The whiskers she got from her dad.  

I loved painting her.  She is just so SOFT.  I think I managed to show the softness although it is not so easy with cats with a lot of white in them.  I am more than pleased with the portrait.  :-)    

And here she is full size ... Sky.  :-)

#24 - Venus

Kittie #24 fresh off the easel.

Venus is still a kitten but eats anything in sight.  Seriously.  Even toilet paper.  She just gobbles it up and "the authorities" have a secret stash of it specially for her.  OK, OK ... actually her mom is trying very hard from keeping her eating toilet paper but she just loves it and for that reason (plus a few other) is sometimes lovingly (?) called Venus de Menace!     

I don't know why but Persian cats are easier to paint these days than short hair cats and I can not figure out why!  It wasn't the case in the past.  Nevertheless ... it was much fun and I hope to paint many more Persians.  :-)

Kittie #22 fresh off the easel.

Cleo was a birthday gift.  She loves the outdoors and talks a LOT.  She knows exactly how to charm her family and "trained" them very well to get what she wants.  :-)  

.

With this painting my goal was to push colour further than I usually do.  I do not know yet if "the authorities" are happy with the painting.  She moved house recently and doesn't have an Internet Connection yet.  Hold thumbs for me please.  And if not, well then I just have to start again and apply the brakes when it comes to colour!

Kittie #21 fresh off the easel.

Angie was a day or two old when her owner got her from FORA (Friends of rescued animals) and had to bottle feed the poor little kitten.  Someone left her and her little sister at FORA's door at night and in the middle of winter.  Her little sister didn't survive but Angie did and she loves being with her owner in her office, thinking she is her office assistant.  :-)  She is much loved and has a stunning personality.  

Angie  was relatively easy to paint as the watercolours "behaved"!  Those of you who know watercolours will know exactly what I mean.  :-)

Kittie #20 fresh off the easel.

Ruthie was rescued at the age of 1 week.  Her owner were chatting with a group of people in a store when a woman told her that someone shoot all the cats on a farm and there were kittens who were too weak to survive.  She immediately took in little Ruthie and bottle-fed her into this gorgeous bundle of fur.  Bless her!    

Here is another step by step pictorial of the painting.  I wish you can see this in person.  The colours isn't as nice on the monitor.  I am realy happy with the painting.  It is soft ... and calming ... and gentle.  Just like most kitties.  Unless you are blessed with a bundle of energy of course.  :-)    

As usual ... first the drawing, then I erase the drawing so I can barely see it.  (Such a waste of time it would seem, but it is actually a critical exersize for me.)   

Eyes first and then the nose.  I like to work from the middle outwards when I start a painting.  

Then I moved on to the ears and then forehead.  

  

Some more work on the head and then I move to the body to give the head a chance to dry.    

Now I work on the cheeks and forehead.

In this stage I do background, darken and sharpen where it is necessary, draw fur and consult with everyone in sight about something being off before I add whiskers.  This is also the stage where I get different comments from different people and where I can seriously mess it up if I make too many changes!  And this is Ruthie done.  :-)

30 Cats in 30 Days - #19 Tembi

#19 - Tembi

Kittie #19 fresh off the easel.

Tembi is the 3rd sister rescued the day before Christmas last year.  I already painted her sisters, Faith and Sparky.  What a handsome trio they are!  Tembi aren't as social as her sisters.  She prefers not to have contact with humans but loves her sisters.  She is also kept indoors as she walks too far away from home.  Shame ... I wonder what happened to her before she was taken into this household.  It seems that she doesn't trust humans.       

Sometimes people ask me how I paint my cats and where I start.  I took photos and will share them with you.  

First I draw the cat, then erase the drawing so it is lighter in most parts.  

Then I paint the eyes.

Some more work on the eyes.

Then I do the first washes on the nose area.  

  

First wash goes onto first the cheeks and then the ears.  

I try to let the ears "bleed"a little into the background area.  

Now I work on the cheeks and forehead.

I draw with the paintbrush in the direction of growth.

Time for background and body.

I added hair in the ears and on the chest.

Then I darken where I think it is necessary

Then I walk around to family, coworkers and friends and

ask if they see something which I didn't that needed to be fixed.

If yes, I fix.  

Time to add whiskers and highlights (with white gouache). 

Et voila!

30 Cats in 30 Days - #18 Monster

Kittie #18 fresh off the easel.

Monster Keponster is a Monster ball of Energy!  He doesn't stop.  He runs accross the room (with a mouse in his mouth on occasion), he tries to bite his dad's toes EVERYTIME he gets out of the shower, jumps on everything (including other cats) and if you want him to pause for a moment, pick him up and cuddle him and he melts like "spookasem" ... for a moment and then ... .   

Full speed ahead!  Thats Monster.  :-)   

Someone asked me how to paint a black cat.  Well I told them that you pour out some black paint and pray that it takes the shape of a cat.  I was of course joking, but let me tell you ... granulating colours makes it Veeeeeeeeery difficult.  :-)  Especially Cobalt Blue mixed with Yellow Ochre and Permanent Rose!  I scrapped that idea for future black cats.  Oh and ... would you please please paint your cats white before you take a photo to send to me?  "smiles"

#17 - Beauty

Kittie #17 fresh off the easel.

Beauty and her brother (Monster) was rescued when someone moved away and their previous owner decided to leave them behind.  Her new mom wanted to keep them till they could find new homes for them as they already had 20 other cats.  But they fell in love with them and just could not let them go.  

She is so soft and cudly and she loves sitting or lying in her mom's arm and then she such on her arm.  She loves nature and the outdoors and can sit under a tree for long stretches of time ... just looking.  She is the most beautiful kitty in her household and she is really is adored.  

I love the background in this painting as well as the chin area of the kitty.  Practice, practice, practise.  :-)

#16 - Cola

Kittie #16 fresh off the easel.

Cola is 8 years old.  At first his owner got his brother, Pepsi, but thought that he was lonely, so she adopted Cola as well.  That was a very wise decision.  Cola can't help but get into fights from time to time.  His ears shows scars of numerous fights and the lense of one of his eyes were removed after a fight but he loves his human family.  He talks a lot and loves attention.  He sleeps at the highest places he can find in the house such as on top of the fridge or on top of the kitchen cabinets.  He loves cheese and olives!  What is not to love about him?  :-)  

I liked the colour of his eyes so much and think I succeeded in making them the focus.

Dear All

I thank you for your overwhelming support and compliments re my painting challenge 30 Cats in 30 Days.  I have two cats and home and 2 adopted cats at work whom I love dearly and deciding to combine my love for felines with my love for painting is the best thing I could have done right now. 

I am halfway there - completed kitty #15 today.  :-)

30 Cats in 30 Days - #15 Aurora

Kittie #15 fresh off the easel.

Aurora is a show cat and she is 7 months old.  She is a bred by her owner and is one of eleven cats in that household.  When she is old enough she will be a mom in that household too.  She is very shy and doesn't come to people very easily.  :-)     

Studio lighting can be a bit confusing as to from which side/angle the light is coming and that makes painting a little more difficult.  She was professionally photographed.  However, again I am happy with my days work.  I especially like the top of the head ... just the look I wanted.  ;-)  Another win for me against watercolour I think.  :-)

 Sparky was rescued with two of her sisters from a township the eve before Chirstmas.  They are kept indoors as they wander too far from home.  Sparky was almost electricuted when she nibbled on the wire of a bedside lamp, hence the name.  Apparently she is the naughtier than her sisters.  :-)  

I am happy with the end result of this painting.  A good photo helps me so much!  I can see variations of the fur and colour of the eyes so much better.  :-)  I didn't do the texturing like yesterday and the day before but just painted they way I always had.  I tried to include some lost edges and tried to blend the kitty into the background more on the left.  Nerve wrecking I must say.  :-)

It may be hard to believe by the looks of this painting but Lizzy is a mom.  She can't have kittens any more but loves being a mother so much that she tries to steal a kitten or two when another cat in her household has babies. 

I have done the texturing on the forehead in the same way as with yesterdays kitty.  Who knows what the next kitty will bring?  :-)

"Killer is a rescue cat from the SPCA and is is "just a cat" (read breed unknown).  He thinks he is human and rules the house like royalty.  His owner went through difficult times and he was so tuned into her that you would think he can read minds.  Cats do behave differently when they sense that their owner is in distress and he is no different.  Unlike so many cats he is very social and likes to be held and loved and he gives it back in bundles.  He loves Biltong (a South African delicacy).   

I tried a new texturing technique on the forehead and next to the ears and I am happy to say that my experiment worked.  :-)

#10 Faith

Faith and 2 other cat were rescued in a township when their mom died.  They were two weeks old. 

She is very "in your face" and quite a handful and according to her mom "naughty".   At 4 in the morning she will run over the bed and over her mom where she sleeps.  She is like a vacuum cleaner and will eat anything in sight.  :-)  To me she just sound young and playful but I guess if she ran over me at 4 in the morning I will shout "naughty" too.  :-) 

This painting was "easy" to make.  The further I got with it, the more I enjoyed it.  :-) 

Such huge eyes.

Rosy is a mamma.  She is also known to be "difficult" and when there is a fight you can be sure that she is one of them trying to sort things out.  :-) 

It is not easy to paint a white cat on white paper and I like to say that watercolour keeps you humble and makes you pray.  Tonight was no exception. 

Rosy is looking up while lying on her stomach but I had to take the focus away from the body which is stretched out behind her head so I added a lot of blue to it.  That also made her head stand out from the background. 

Gorgeous ... isn't she?

Chia is rescue cat with a tom-boy personality.  She is known to smack her fellow kitties when she thinks they need some correction.  :-)  

I managed to capture the sofness of the long fluffy hair below her chin and is quite pleased with that.  My own cats are all short haired, so this is something to get used to.  

I had to laugh at myself ... I grabbed one of the cats at work last night and told him that I want to inspect the shape of his nose.  :-)  He wasn't pleased.  :-)

30 Cats in 30 days - #7 Zaza

The beautiful Zaza. 

I am really blessed with my 30 Cats in 30 Days project!  The orders keep on coming in and it is a previlage to get to know all of the kitties in this way.  Believe you me ... I think I will recognise them should I see them walking down the street!  (Not that I hope to see them roaming free ... all that nasty cars and dogs you know.)  I love dogs, please don't get me wrong ... but they are bigger and their teeth sharper and they somehow feel threatened by our kitties and feel the need to protect themselves by attacking.  :-)  

Zaza's mom got a telephone call in 2003 in which she was told that the 2 wild cats she tamed will have to be removed or put to sleep.

Zaza is cross-eyed and was very afraid of humans and his brother had huge ears. Her daughter chose Zaza and with a lot of love (and Echo Fear) he became the gorgeous cat you see here, who taught his human family that you do not have to be perfect to give and receive love.

He has various special needs and sometimes he walks into walls ... but he always welcomes her at the door and rubs against her legs and when he senses that she misses her daughter he nestles tightly against her.

Zaza ... her love and light.

Gobelino at your service.  

Gobelino reminds me of a butler.  His expression says to me ... Are you alright?  Do you need anything? 

Do you agree? 

Well ... I went back to painting the face first, then the body, then the background and lastly the eyes.  

I bought paper and tubes of watercolour and was told that someone broke into the shop and stole the cash register.  Thank goodness the shop wasn't trashed.  Can you imagine thousands and thousands of beads and mosaic tiles on the floor?  Or scrapbooking paper tore up or even tubes of paint emptied on the floor?  They were having burglar bars installed in the terrible heat yesterday. 

Anyway ... back to Gobelino.  I love wetting the paper and laying in the first washes and looking at the colour spreading.  It is the second layer of paint I do not love so much.  :-)  I wish I can attend watercolour workshops done by someone REALLY REALLY good.  Maybe one of his?

	Ek dink jou werk is pragtig! Jou tegniek is baie goed en jy het beslis nie klasse nodig nie. Waterverf is n moeilike medium om mee te werk en Die katte- reeks is besonders. Ek is seker hulle voel soos kinders vir jou en dat elkeen wat verkoop swaar van jou hart gaan. Baie geluk!

Pokkel is the name of this lovely kitty.  

I tried to do a few things differently such as painting the background first.  It took me longer to paint the kitty than the previous ones because of that as I lost some of my drawing which caused great panic at times.  :-)  Nevertheless ... here it is and I am happy. 

Today I must get painting supplies but I am not looking forward to it in this heat.  It is 37 degrees C!  Being so far from any large towns and lots of suppliers have its disadvantages, although not very many!  Thankfully the local art supply shop in my nearest town (Le Mar Arts and Crafts) do their best to keep their clients happy and the prices are great too!

I painted him a bit tigher than the others.  Wish I can stay loose. I love the blue background colour!

What can I say?  I love this project and so are the collectors.  :-)  I am trying out new colours and learn more about watercolours than ever before. 

As per always (with watercolours) I got to a stage of desperation and made a trip to the fridge where I hide my stash of chocolate (nobody looks for it there) after which I came back to the painting, put in some more darks, the whiskers and highlights in the eyes ... et voila ... it all comes together!

The first wash is done and this is the stage where the colours are so pure and you think by yourself:  hey ... this is going to be great!

Stage 1

Stage 2 is where I pull my hair out and decide to start over.  But before I start over I will just try ONE more thing and ...

Stage 3 is when it comes together and you went from desperation to elation.  :-)  You got to love watercolours!

30 Cats in 30 days - #1 Tim-Tim

30 Cats in 30 days - # 1 Tim-Tim. 

I am very excited about my new project of painting 30 cats in 30 days.  These kitty paintings will be available for sale and you can contact me on reynel@doringbaai.co.za to buy a painting.  

This particular kitty is called Tim-Tim and he is beautiful and adorable according to everything I read about him on my Facebook Page called Katte en hul dinge.

He is painted in my loose and almost impressionistic style with watercolours on paper.  I do not try to copy the photographs to have an exact match but use artistic license, especially where it comes to colour, to paint these kitties. 

Good photograhps are essential when it comes to painting domestic animals and the eyes most certainly make the paintings.  Therefor it is extremely difficult to paint a pet (read child) when I cannot make out the shape and colour of the eyes.  The best photos are those taken in daylight, outside, but in shade, where the cat is looking towards you or slightly to the side.  But then again ... a kitty with cattitude photographed from the back can also give interesting results.
