Spotlight on artists of the West Coast of South africa #2 - Frik Kleinhans (Lamberts Bay)
Delightful things happen when you least expect it!
I have wanted to eat at Funky Tastebuds in Lamberts Bay for a while now and finally got the opportunity.
Carly and I came in for breakfast.
I had a hard time deciding what to order. I wanted everything!
We settled on Muesli, Joghurt and fresh fruit with honey because I wanted something cool and refreshing.
Funky Tastebuds is a
visual feast
for the eyes
and after ordering I noticed paintings from a local artist and enquired about them.
Francél du Preez-Strauss, the Chef/Owner of Funky Tastebuds, arranged an impromptu interview with local artist,
Frik Kleinhans,
painter of nostalgic items and brand names of our era.
What a wonderful way of recording history.
Frik is a retired Dominee and his artistic journey became serious in the late 1990’s when
his health deteriorated to a point where he could no longer work.
He developed his own technique and I hope my description is accurate.
He uses mount board
which he paints black with acrylic paint,
then uses a bleach to draw the basic shapes of the items of his still lifes.
This gives him an image which is more or less Sepia in colour and then he applies colour
with acrylic inks and acrylic paints
and finally a sealer.
I have never heard of paintings done this way and would really love to watch him make a painting.
Frik is a very kind and open person and gave me some ideas to implement into my own art career.
It was wondeful meeting you Frik. :-)
Now if you relocated to New Zealand or Australia or Canada ... or ... or ... won't you want some of our culture displayed in your house?
Friks paintings are for sale at Funky Tastebuds or you can contact the artist directly on frik@cybersmart.co.za.
His Facebook page is Frik Kleinhans Art
Thank you Funky Tastebuds ... for a wonderful breakfast and for introducing me to Frik.
We will be back to try this ...
and this ...
and ...
The bread is REAL boerebrood,
the tomato sauce is REAL tomato sause
The fresh fruit is FRESH fruit,
figs syruppy sweet ...
Expectations exceeded.
:-)
