Spotlight on artists of the West Coast of South Africa nr 1 - Mercia Smit (Strandfontein)

Spotlight on artists of the West Coast of South africa #1 - Mercia Smit

My daughter moved to New Zealand from South Africa and my granddaughter lived with me for most of the past year.  She is about to join her mother in 6 weeks time and I took some time off to take her on a camping trip.  As we move from town to town we plan to meet local artists and tell you about them on this blog.

We started our trip in Strandfontein at the West Coast of South Africa (only 7km from home) and first on our list of local artists was Mercia Smit.  She lives with her husband on a farm just outside of Strandfontein and not only does she have the the wonderful peace and quiet of living on a farm, but she also has a view of the sea!

Mercia loves all things earthy.
Her palette consists of mostly earthy colours and she paints in oil and acrylic.
I love the painting of sheep above.

We spent a wonderful afternoon with her.
While she and I chatted away Carly played with her dog, Pater (short for Paternoster).

I just love the vibrant colours in the painting as well as the figure walking down the road.

The decor in her house is a wonderful mix of natural elements.  I could not stop taking photos.

I found these treasures in a corner of her living room.

A colleciton of dried flowers in a basket.

Mercia made this with mobile with things dear to her.
A shoe her sister wore when she was a baby.
Old spoons
Glasses and shells

She made this with clay.

Her studio.

I love the collection of rocks not too far from her studio.

A clay tile she made.

Lovely.

We had to say goodbye.  It was not easy.   Even on my way to the car I took photos!

It is part of a wreath she made.  Too gorgeous!

Thank you so much for allowing us into your studio and house for a lovely afternoon Mercia
and thanks for the coffee and cookies.
Much appreciated.
